Freight Carman Jobs
A Freight Carman is a mechanic for train cars other than locomotives. The Freight Carman is responsible for keeping freight cars safe and operational.
Freight Carman Job Duties
- May work in the shop, the rail yard, or trackside
- Inspect rail cars for safe operation
- Make any necessary repairs to rail cars
- Operate hand and power tools, including welding equipment
- May be required to paint rail cars
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of railroad equipment
Freight Carmen may also be specialized, such as sheet metal workers or pipefitters.
Freight Carman Training and Salary
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Courses in mechanics, shop, or related subjects are helpful. A freight carman will make a competitive mechanics salary.
