Railroad Conductor Training

Find out how you can find the top schools to get training and take classes to become a professional train conductor.

Inhouse Conductor Training

Most railroad conductors are promoted from within the company they work for, or have previous railroad experience as a brakeman/signalman or rail yard worker. All train conductors are required to complete a training course. Many larger railroads such as BNSF, CSX and Union Pacific provide in-house classes for conductors.

Colleges and Schools with Conductor Programs

If your company does not provide education, or you want to train as a train conductor on your own, there are various community colleges and training academies that offer training courses.

The Modoc Railroad Academy in Madison, California is a state-of-the-art training facility that offers its students classroom and laboratory training. The conductor training program has been approved by Amtrak, Union Pacific and BSNF, among other railroads. Modoc also offers job placement assistants for candidates who successfully complete the nine-week conductor training program.

A Fast Track conductor training program is available through the National Academy of Railroad Sciences, located on the campus of Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Students who successfully complete this six-week training program will receive a certificate of completion, making them eligible for entry-level employment as a railroad conductor. Graduates also receive 16 college credit hours that can be applied to an Associate of Science degree.

Other railroad conductor programs are available at Tulsa Community College in Tulsa, Oklahoma; the Okefenokee Technical College in Georgia; and Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, Minnesota.
